New York Fashion Week

http://thedali.org/history/biography.html
y pintura metafisica.
http://search.yahoo.com/search?ei=UTF-8&fr=crmas&p=dadaismo+pintura
En esa epoca conocio a Federico Garcia Lorca y Luis Bunuel. Con este
ultimo, Dali colaboro en "Un Perro Andaluz". Su amistad con Picasso merece
capitulo aparte.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Un_chien_andalou
http://www.slideshare.net/carloschurba/dal-la-persistencia-de-la-memoria

Cerámica/azulejos- La Tienda 3 day sale
Some of our favorite travel experiences have been shopping for cerámica while traveling in Spain, Mexico, Italy and Portugal. Some purchases have become family folklore as I bought oversized pieces inconveniencing fellow family travelers traveling by taxi.
It is interesting to see how the lovely hand painted azulejos have changed over the years as the hand painted tiles slowly give way to more economical production methods. The word azulejo is an Arabic derived word ( http://www.sociedadhispanadoylestown.com/2011/01/palabras-arabes-en-espanol.html )
We have had varied experiences shipping cerámica to our home from abroad-hence caution is in order should you choose that route. Williamsburg, VA based La Tienda is offering a 3 day cerámica sale which can be found here:
http://www.tienda.com/sale/ceramics.html?utm_source=Resp&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=EMC-110511PR&utm_content=feature
Mexican Talavera tiles can be found here http://www.mexicantiles.com/talavera-ceramic-tile.html
Talavera de la Reina, Toledo, Spain, a historically significant cerámica city, can be found here:

The Camoes (Portugal) virtual history of Portuguese azulejos by century can be found here:

My favorite cerámica? Viene de Guanajuato, GTO., although it isn't contained in the video below. (beautiful singing accompanies the YouTube video in Spanish)

Are azulejos an investment? Do collectors buy for future price appreciation? Sotheby's?

The Hispanic Society of America A free museum and reference library
Hispanic Society weblink:
Joaquim Sorolla y Bastida obras:

Magnum Photographer Cristiana Garcia Rodero
Sociedad Hispana member Amanda (thank you!) has been linking a New York Times current series on Galicia and Spain. She made reference in social media to Spanish Photography, and an interesting article about Magnum Photographer Cristina Garcia Rodero. The history of Magnum reads like the history of photography. A good read on the photo agency: Magnum: Fifty Years at the Front Line of History: The Story of the Legendary Photo Agency
A prior post: http://www.sociedadhispanadoylestown.com/2011/03/robert-capa-spanish-civil-war.html debates the authenticity of a most famous Robert Capa (Co-Founder of Magnum) photo taken during the Spanish Civil War.
The article from the NYT that generated this web entry about Cristina Garcia Rodero is here:
http://intransit.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/08/22/in-madrid-exploring-galicia-through-photography/
I do not believe she was the first woman member of Magnum, as the article indicates, but will explore it further.
None of this detracts from the great Garcia Rodero photography found on the Magnum website here:
http://www.magnumphotos.com/Archive/C.aspx?VP=XSpecific_MAG.PhotographerDetail_VPage&l1=0&pid=2K7O3R1V204V&nm=Cristina%20Garcia%20Rodero
Garcia Rodero won the prestigious Eugene Smith Humanitarian Photography award in 1989.

Doylestown Arts Festival/Univest Grand Prix Bike Race
The combination of a professional bike race combined with the Doylestown Arts Festival is an entertaining way to spend Sunday Sept 18 in Doylestown. For Sociedad Hispana followers who haven't attended before it is great to watch the "criterium" bike race which begins at 11:00AM and follows a roughly oval course of about one mile within the borough. This has the advantage of seeing the riders pass every few minutes, while also attending the art fair that occurs within the oval bike course. If one attends the Tour de France(Tour de France history:
http://www.letour.fr/2011/TDF/HISTO/us/index.html ) , for example, the riders pass by once-maybe lasting a minute or two-and that's it! The links to the bike race and the Doylestown Arts Festival can be found here:

Mallorca is a beautiful island off the coast of the Iberian peninsula. I spent a long weekend in Palma, the capital city, two years ago with a group of friends. One friend is a native to the island or Mallorquin and was so gracious to be the tour guide for the group, showing us some of the beautiful sites, hidden beaches and overlooks.

Marketing to Hispanics-Interesting article from Ad Age

Sociedad Hispana member Amanda referred us to this article based on a question by a Florida State student to the article author. There are a lot of useful links in the article, including the effort for a National Latino Museum in Washington, DC. This latter effort was proposed by President Bush, and later advanced by President Obama. The direct link to this video can be found here: http://myamericanlatinomuseum.org/

Robert Capa, Spanish Civil War Photographer
http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/c/robert_capa/index.html?scp=6&sq=spanish%20civil%20war&st=cse
Recently the International Center of Photography in New York staged an exhibition containing photos from the "lost Mexican suitcase," a group of Capa negatives found in Mexico recently-some 55 years after Capa was killed by a land mine in Vietnam during the French occupation in 1954. The New York Times today ran an article about Capa, discussing his life, including the famous "Falling Spanish Soldier" photo thought to be a staged photo by some experts. Either I am just realizing it, but it seems the Franco era is still being more than hotly debated. Perhaps this is because of the International Court appeal brought by Spanish Judge Baltzar, who was recently stopped from trying to investigate the disappearance of thousands of people under the Franco regime.
Sociedad Hispana Doylestown book club will in the future read the best selling author Javier Cercas, who wrote Soldados de Salamina, as well as other books written near the time Capa was photographing the Guerra Civil in Spain.

Travels in Uruguay

The Wall Street Journal this morning has a good travel narrative on Uruguay in the adventure and travel section-to include food, the arts, and must see locales. Included is a short blurb about Eduardo Galeano (Open Veins of Latin America 1971), an Uruguayan author brought to my attention by my Bolivian language mixer friend Edil. Personality profiles of famous artists, musicians, and chefs are also noted. I spent one enjoyable evening in Montevideo as a teenager. It was a beautiful evening at a family run restaurant called Cicilio's. When not cooking, or waiting on tables, several of the family members provided singing entertainment. I have often wondered if the restaurant is still in business, with entertainment provided by the next generation of Cicilio's family!
For football enthusiasts: The first World Cup was held in Uruguay, with the host country taking the title.

Marta Becket Amargosa Opera House, Death Valley California
This blogpost takes pause from the stated purpose of Sociedad Hispana Doylestown shown at blog heading for two reasons. The first concerns the international language mixer ( blogpost 12 February), and the growing SHD blog activity coming from abroad. Hence, I decided to make this post in English, about American culture, for Skype (language mixer) friends in Spain, Mexico, Guatemala, Chile and Nicaragua. These folks are wanting to improve their English, and in return are kind enough to help me improve my Spanish speaking skill. I hope they also have an interest in western US culture.

The second reason relates to the blog post itself. I have twice visited Death Valley National Park California on landscape photography trips. It is the largest US national park outside of Alaska, but it is a personal story of an elderly woman who still lives in an old borax mining ghost town called Death Valley Junction that is unique. Marta Becket, a Pennsylvanian by upbringing, an actress, singer, and painter by trade, was traveling through the area in the 1960's with her husband, and made an impromptu decision to buy the ghost town theater of the defunct Pacific Coast Borax Company. Shortly thereafter she opened the theater as the Amargosa Opera House. For many performances not a seat was occupied. Her response? She painted an audience on the rear theater wall. This was noticed by a passing National Geographic crew, who profiled her, leading to stories in well known nationally syndicated magazines. Further notoriety came with Public Broadcasting System (PBS) special documentaries, leading to fame in Europe, in turn bringing French and Swedish tourists for visits to the ghost town theater. Marta had difficulty recruiting help to live in a ghost town, so she trained a stage hand to entertain. He became her second husband. On my last trip to Death Valley I had the chance to meet the 85 year old Marta and spend an hour with her as she told me her life story. In spite of being in a wheel chair, she indicated to me that the show must go on, and that she would perform from her wheel chair within two months. I really hoped she would succeed. After reading various news reports, I see she never made it back to the stage. I am honored to have met Marta Becket.
