http://www.sociedadhispanadoylestown.com/2011/04/alcala-de-henares-una-ciudad-con-mucha.html .

Reality Distortion Field-Brief notes on Steve Jobs Biography

Recently, I read the book Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson.  Customarily I read bios of people deceased in prior decades or centuries, but couldn't resist the Kindle download price.   Perhaps the title of a recent Philadelphia Inquirer book review,  "Jobs as wizard and tyrant" is a useful summation, but for me the book was one of the few "can't put it down" books involving technology/biography I have read.  For the author's background information be sure and view the videos found on the Amazon link at the bottom of the post.

A few of my takeaways from this book:

1.) Vision.  Business books/academics/companies always preach know what your customer wants.  Jobs believed he knew what his customers wanted when they didn't know.  He was able to marry technology to those future needs.  One example from the book relates to rounded corners, and how important they are from a product design standpoint.  Whether software or hardware,  product completion dates frequently lagged as Jobs insisted on his vision of design which included rounded corners.  This was where his total control of Apple Computer differentiated him from other visionaries like Gates.   The same applied to factories:  layout and design- painting industrial machinery the exact color shade; as well as Apple retail stores, (entrance stairs have a Jobs patent, or two), all were managed to a minute detail level by Jobs.

2.  Tyrannical nature:  The use of comedy circuit off color language in berating employees, suppliers, and industry stalwarts such as Bill Gates is well known.  For me it was his inability to agree with others suggestions, as he preferred to label many new ideas as "shit," while later adopting some as though they were his ideas.

3.  Control:  "Reality Distortion Field."  This term applies to events unable to be controlled by Jobs.  He simply ignored them.  The best example is an illegitimate child he fathered.  He ignored her for several years as though she didn't exist pretending it never happened.   Jobs wanted control of everything, and was proved wrong infrequently, given the successes he brought forth, but the reality distortion field dealt with those he couldn't control.

4.  "Oh, one more thing" (a favorite finale of a Jobs product intro) Many years ago I had the opportunity to choose whether I wanted to buy a Mac, or stick with the PC platform in a business environment.  I felt silly a few years later  after opting for the Mac, as Apple declined and Jobs was ousted from Apple Computer.  Oh how things change, but not me.  I was just a few decades too early!

El día de los Muertos - Janitzio, Michoacán, México

http://www.lakepatzcuaro.org/DayOfDead.html

Zero to fluent in Spanish in 9 months

Since starting work on improving my  Spanish communication skills several years ago, one consistent source of learning excellence has been Ben and Marina at Notes in Spanish. Ben is a ten year English born resident of Madrid who has teamed up with a skilled madrileña teacher, Marina.  We started by downloading many of the Notes in Spanish Advanced podcasts, and continue to listen to them as we travel in the car.  I think this couple go beyond simply being another internet Spanish learning web site, and recommend these folks to anyone wanting to improve such language skills.  It is interesting to see how Marina corrects Ben, and how skilled she is with the language.  It is also easy to see the large following they have worldwide.  After putting the Sociedad Hispana Doylestown web link on the Notes in Spanish forum, our website traffic increased markedly.  The Notes in Spanish home page can be found here:

http://www.notesinspanish.com/

Many of the recommendations made in the link below are aimed at those just beginning to learn Spanish, while others are meant for higher ability levels.  Can a beginner go from zero to fluent in 9 months?

Meet Bloombito

Photo: topnews.in

Colby College Spanish/word refererence/TV web links.

http://www.colby.edu/~bknelson/SLC/index.php

I have reposted the link to a really good instructional website that includes music and the arts, while improving Spanish skills.  There have been  many inquiries in recent weeks from new people interested in improving their language ability. The Sociedad Hispana Doylestown website archive numbers have grown, making it difficult to locate instructional links.  This is a good site for self testing, with immediate grading showing errors.

For those looking for a word definition reference source a good link can be found here:

MilenioTV is back on the air, live,  for those wanting to listen to the language, as spoken by our friends south of the Rio Grande.  The link is here:

This great website, thanks to Colby College, deals with the festival of San Fermin, otherwise better known in the US as the "Running of the Bulls in Pamplona" which happens today!  Be sure to listen to the music, and take the Spanish test!

For true aficionados, watch the running of the bulls live here:

Marketing to Hispanics-Interesting article from Ad Age

http://adage.com/article/the-big-tent/a-required-living-list-marketers-targeting-hispanics/227861/
Sociedad Hispana member Amanda referred us to this article based on a question by a Florida State student to the article author.  There are a lot of useful links in the article, including the effort for a National Latino Museum in Washington, DC.  This latter effort was  proposed by President Bush, and later advanced by President Obama.  The direct link to this video can be found here:  http://myamericanlatinomuseum.org/

Test your Spanish level

http://ave.cervantes.es/prueba_nivel/default.htm?Idioma=esp

This self test, from AVE, particularly the oral part seemed difficult.  The result can then be compared to the level Instituto Cervantes( and most of Europe) uses for placing students.  The latter page can be found here:

Autonomous regions of Spain

http://www.worldstatesmen.org/Spanish_autonomous_communities.html

In trying to learn about Spain I have concluded I need more knowledge of the Autonomous Regions. Sociedad Hispana followers looking for such background information, including maps, anthems, brief history, etc., can find it in the link above. Many of the autonomous regions have an extremely long and widely varying history,  including language, as documented in an earlier post which can be found here:

Mixer language exchange

http://www.language-exchanges.org/es/content/welcome

I have been testing the last few days this methodology that allows one to speak with others across the globe.  It is for all levels of Spanish speaking ability.  I  have set up skype counterparties in Spain, Bolivia, Colombia, Chile, and Argentina, using this language mixer. We are swapping time  so they can practice English, and allowing me time to speak  in Spanish.  Pardon the overly personal nature of this blogpost, but I am able to understand TV, podcasts, etc. in Spanish, but lack the avenue for speaking in Spanish- hence I know I lack the fluency I would like.  I now have a way where I can set up, in advance ( I have 30 minutes tomorrow scheduled with a Spanish instructor in Spain who also wants to speak English), or on an impromptu basis,  conversations that allow me to speak in Spanish.  At the end of the session, via instant skypechat, the counter party then makes suggestions for improvement.   It requires you to set up a site on the main web page saying what languages you are interested in practicing, as well as your native language.  The site originator has been, for the most part, successful in keeping it to a language mixer, not a dating site.

The program was started by a professor at Dickinson College in Carlyle PA, and is worth looking into if you feel you aren't getting enough speaking opportunities.   If any members of Sociedad Hispana would like to set up an internal mechanism within our organization to do the same thing I would be pleased to assist.
