Vita Education Services/Information on Free English as a Second Language Classes

Vita's free English as a Second Language (ESL), reading, writing, math, and High School Equivalency (HSE) preparation classes for adult learners resume in September, 2018, at locations throughout Bucks County. Interested individuals are required to attend an orientation/registration session in order to participate.

Vita offers small group and class instruction at many educational levels for both native and non-native speakers of English. A major emphasis of the program is the development of skills to increase opportunities for HSE attainment, post-secondary education and training, gaining or retaining employment, and parental involvement in the success of their children in school. All students are provided with their own texts and workbooks to help them with home study.

This year, Vita is offering a new kind of ESL class called "Grow Your Own Business," which combines English language learning; learning about American culture, history, and government; and professional training to start or grow a business.

Bucks County Project Gallery-Photographs From Beyond Borders.

Bucks County Project Gallery

Congratulations to Stephanie Lisle for opening this Doylestown photography gallery. Stephanie has a good knowledge of photography, and I always enjoy discussing the state of the art with her.  I stopped by the gallery today to see the current exhibit "Photographs Beyond Borders."  One of the photographers in the current exhibit, Mary Richardson Miller, spent several years on a humanitarian mission in Guatemala in the village of Candelaria.  During those years Mary photographed the women of the village, the subject of her photographs.  The portraits show the lovely saturated color of traditional film, without the photoshop over saturation of color sometimes associated with the digital world.

For Sociedad Hispana members who haven't visited the Project Gallery it is worth a visit.  As the announcement post card above indicates there is an opening reception for Photographs Beyond Borders on Friday September 20th from 6:00PM to 8:00PM.

The Bucks County Project Gallery is located at 252 West Ashland Street in Doylestown, right in the heart of Bucks County. Our mission is to give photographers, both local and international, their own forum to exhibit and interact with their community, giving the art of photography its own special place to shine while making it accessible and affordable.

Current hours: Thu 12-4pm, Fri 1-5pm, Sat 1-5pm, Sun 11am-3pm and by appointment.

Hispanic Heritage Month

It seems there is something of interest going on in many places in the Delaware Valley to celebrate the tail end of Hispanic Heritage Month.  We previously linked the Big Brothers/Big Sisters Fiesta celebration, which can be found on the Sociedad Hispana Doylestown website here: http://www.sociedadhispanadoylestown.com/2011/10/big-brothers-big-sisters-of-bucks.html

Villanova University (Mainline Philly-Villanova, PA) celebrates José María Arguedas.  A complete program of seminars/events associated with the Peruvian poet can be found here:
       http://www.wix.com/snzekmi/arguedas#!program

Cultural events at Villanova happening concurrent with the celebration can be found here:
       http://www.wix.com/snzekmi/arguedas#!cultural-events

There will be a non-public showing of the movie  Soy Andina at Villanova.  The weblink for this movie, with trailer, can be found here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1372706/  There will also be a public showing of Soy Andina at UPenn Philadelphia.

Bucks County Community College is taking the opportunity to discuss immigration issues.  The BCCC program : " Immigration:  Myths and Realities" can be found here: http://www.phillyburbs.com/news/local/courier_times_news/bucks-county-community-college-to-host-forum-on-immigration/article_5346fa24-c09a-50ac-8462-ec9aeee496e6.html

I make an effort to speak to immigrants as a way to understand, and of course try to improve my ability to communicate in Spanish.  I have taught ESL, and my wife continues to teach ESL.  I enjoy meeting  Latino immigrants, and while not wanting to involve politics in this website,  I do believe we need an immigration policy.

Edward Weston-Photographer and Philosopher and his cats

The historical video linked below discusses the Weston philosophy of life as it relates to his photography.  I have posted this for many of the international friends of Sociedad Hispana Doylestown who may have an interest in the beautiful California coast and US National Parks such as Yosemite.

In the next few weeks I will get another opportunity to visit that part of the US where I enjoy taking my large format 5"X7" camera following in the footsteps of Edward Weston, hopefully to include Yosemite National park should the highly unpredictable snowfall not close roads.

A year or two ago the Michener Museum in Doylestown (  http://www.michenermuseum.org/ )  had a major Weston exhibition celebrating the life and work of this pioneer black and white landscape photographer.  (see bio here: http://www.edward-weston.com/edward_weston_biography.htm )

Doylestown Arts Festival/Univest Grand Prix Bike Race

The combination of a professional bike race combined with the Doylestown Arts Festival is an entertaining way to spend Sunday Sept 18 in Doylestown.  For Sociedad Hispana followers who haven't attended before it is great to watch the "criterium" bike race which begins at 11:00AM and follows a roughly oval course of about one mile within the borough.  This has the advantage of seeing the riders pass every few minutes, while also attending the art fair that occurs within the oval bike course.  If one attends the Tour de France(Tour de France history:
http://www.letour.fr/2011/TDF/HISTO/us/index.html ) , for example, the riders pass by once-maybe lasting a minute or two-and that's it!  The links to the bike race and the Doylestown Arts Festival can be found here:
