MONACO (AP) -- Rafael Nadal edged Grigor Dimitrov 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 Friday to win his 45th straight match

at the Monte Carlo Masters and reach the semifinals.
Top-ranked Novak Djokovic had less trouble with Jarkko Nieminen, beating the Finnish veteran 6-4, 6-3. Djokovic won despite a balky right ankle, which the Serb twisted two weeks ago a during Davis Cup match against the United States.
''I didn't feel the ankle was bothering me today,'' Djokovic said. ''We played a lot of long rallies. I'm really glad things are going in the right direction.''
In the semifinal, he'll face unseeded Fabio Fognini, who defeated Richard Gasquet 7-6 (0), 6-2.
Nadal will meet Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who beat Stanislas Wawrinka 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
The Spaniard dropped only his third set in his last five tournaments here, the previous times against Andy Murray in the 2011 semifinals and Djokovic in the 2009 final. He was under pressure at 30-30 in the eighth game of the final set before hitting a crucial serve.

''I know that when you have these tough matches, is decisive to keep fighting,'' Nadal said. ''If you keep fighting, you will lose some, but you will have a chance to win a lot of ones.''
The eight-time defending champion sealed victory on his second match point with an ace, after Dimitrov saved the first one with a forehand winner of astonishing power from the back of the court. It was even more impressive because he was struggling with a leg cramp.
''First of all, it's a tough loss. I think I gave everything I had today,'' Dimitrov said. ''I must say, all credit to him. He's an extraordinary player, extraordinary fighter.''
As age17, Dimitrov took a set off Nadal at the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam, Netherlands. On Friday, he thrilled the center-court crowd with a superb display of attacking tennis punctuated by exquisite drop shots and high-speed winners off both the backhand and forehand.
By regularly taking the ball early, Dimitrov unsettled Nadal's rhythm and the seven-time French Open champion was unable to dictate play.

David Ferrer withdrew from next week’s Monte Carlo Rolex Masters, citing a thigh injury he sustained in his final loss to Andy Murray at the Sony Open in Miami. The No. 1 Spaniard tweeted his apologies and hoped to be recovered in time for the Barcelona Open, which begins April 22.
No. 4 Ferrer sits 585 points and one ranking spot ahead of Rafael Nadal as the clay season begins. His decision to skip Monte Carlo won’t threaten his position as he looks to hold off Nadal to keep the No. 4 ranking heading into the French Open. Having lost in his opening round last year to Thomaz Bellucci, Ferrer was defending a mere 10 points in Monte Carlo.
Nadal, the eight-time defending champion, is defending 1,000 points and can only lose ground to Ferrer regardless of the result. To catch Ferrer, Nadal will need to win every clay lead-up he plays — Monte Carlo, Barcelona, Madrid and Rome — and hope Ferrer suffers a few early losses. Otherwise, Nadal will go into the French Open, a tournament he’s won seven of the last eight years, ranked outside of the top four for the first time since he first played the event in 2005.

AVALANCHAS DE NIEVE NEPAL

Mart Gasull es el español muerto a causa de una avalancha en la falda del monte Manaslu, en la cordillera del Himalaya, en la que tambén han fallecido nueve montañeros. El Manaslu es la octava montaña más alta del mundo, con 8.156 metros. Las autoridades nepalíes han confirmado hasta el momento la muerte de nueve montañistas, la mayoría alemanes o franceses, según las primeras informaciones. La avalancha ha tenido lugar en la parte norte del distrito de Gorja. Hasta el lugar se han desplazado equipos de rescate procedentes de la capital Katmandú, de la región del monte Machapuchare y de la ciudad de Simrik. El Ministerio de Exteriores está en contacto con la familia de Gasull, con la embajada española en New Delhi, de la que depende la de Katmandú, y con las autoridades locales para prestar toda la asistencia y la colaboración necesaria. Muy pelogrosas estas exploraciones con avalanchas.

El robot Curiosity aterrizó con éxito en el planeta Marte tras un viaje de 567 millones de kilómetros. Se trata del explorador móvil más complejo enviado por la NASA al espacio. La sonda interplanetaria penetró el cielo rojizo de Marte el domingo por la noche, se depositó suavemente en la superficie de un cráter gigante y dio inicio a la misión espacial más ambiciosa que se haya realizado. La NASA dijo que recibió una señal del Curiosity poco después de que ingresó en la atmósfera marciana, etapa que ha sido calificada como  los "siete minutos de terror".

El descenso de la sonda significó la misión robótica más complicada jamás intentada por la NASA, debido a las características del explorador. En los minutos de mayor tensión la nave en frenó su velocidad de 20.920 Km/h con la ayuda de un paracaídas, un escudo térmico y cohetes. “Aterrizaje confirmado", dijo el ingeniero Allen Chen. "Estamos seguros en Marte", destacó. Minutos después, el Curiosity respondió enviando las primeras fotografías en blanco y negro desde interior del cráter Gale. En ellas se reflejaban su rueda y su sombra, delineada por el sol de la tarde. "Al parecer aterrizamos en una buena zona plana. Linda, realmente linda", destacó el ingeniero Adam Steltzner, que dirigió al equipo que concibió el ingenioso método de aterrizaje.

El objetivo de Curiosity para esta misión es buscar rastros de vida durante los próximos dos años. Para ello, el robot está equipado con el Laboratorio Científico Marciano, compuesto por instrumentos de análisis para examinar el suelo, las rocas y la atmósfera.
También incluye  un láser para pulverizar fragmentos de rocas que lo puedan obstaculizar y un instrumento diseñado para detectar compuestos orgánicos. El Curiosity se posó al pie del monte Sharp, que se eleva sobre 5.500 metros en el centro del cráter Gale, abierto hace unos 3.000 millones de años por el impacto de un meteorito y que se cree que albergó un lago. El estudio de los distintos estratos geológicos del monte, auténtico testimonio de la historia de Marte, es uno de los objetivos de la misión. El explorador tiene una fuente nuclear de energía que le permitirá seguir operando por todo un año marciano, equivalente a unos 23 meses de la Tierra.
