Like some suspicion with your soup? A bit of intrigue with your entrées? Or, would you prefer some suspense with your supper?
La Camarga was in the news … not for its food and ambience, but because it hosted a dinner with the leader of the regional Partido Popular (currently top dogs in Madrid) and the former girlfriend of a prominent Catalan politician. Their conversation was recorded for a private detective agency commissioned by the Socialist opposition via microphones hidden among flowers on the table. Bribes, corruption, money laundering…the whole nine yards. It transpired that the owner of the detective agency is a regular customer and a good friend of the owner.
Favoured by politicians, their aides and crooked paymasters, La Camarga offers discerning diners discreet (though, obviously, not very private) dining rooms.
The food here is pretty good and, compared with similar establishments in other capital cities, offers exceptional value.
The last time I ate here I was served 12 starters, including gazpacho, mini spring rolls, bean salad, croquettes, mini barbecue ribs, and cuttlefish, served with two different wines. For a main course I had roast leg of lamb with a bitter orange confit accompanied with a Bierzo, while my partner enjoyed fillet mignon with tortilla. We were then served two exceptionally tasty desserts. All good stuff.
Service is good, if formal. If you’re wanting to push the boat out while you’re here you could do a lot worse. Just keep in mind who could be listening.
