WXPN Latin Roots Live (at World Cafe)! Los Hacheros
February 9th, 2017 (Philadelphia)
Time:  Doors 7pm / Show 8pm
Description:  "The event is FREE, but RSVP required. The six-piece, Brooklyn-based Los Hacheros, led by Hector “Papote” Jiminez (lead vocals and congas), draws upon son, charanga, and salsa – with fiery injections of Puerto Rican bomba – to evoke a style that recalls classic sounds of the Caribbean. The band has been called “modern day torchbearers of the Golden Age of Latin music,” known for its swinging, memorable live performances that keep dance floors filled all night long. Los Hacheros’ second and most recent album Bambulaye (Chulo/Daptone Records) was recorded live to vintage analog tape, giving the music a raw, but warm and open sound similar to the Latin legends who are its inspiration."

April 2016

Después de la Frontera at Taller Puertorriqueño

April 29th - June 25th, 2016 @  (FREE!):

RECEPTION: Friday, April 29 | 5:30-8pm | FREE

"Después de la Frontera / After the Border honors the stories of recent unaccompanied immigrant youth, families, and young adults who fled their homes in Central America. While providing cultural and historical context of the countries involved, the exhibition explores the complexities involved in crossing the border, challenges of integrating into a new environment, and what youth and families envision their futures to be.
In addition to gang recruitment, extortion, drug cartels, abuse, and persecution in their homeland, youth and families fleeing this violence face continued threats on their journey to a fate unknown. The dangerous passage through Mexico and across the border to the U.S. increases the likelihood that the youth may become the target of human trafficking, kidnapping, sexual assault, and death. Since January 2014, more than 875 Latino immigrant students have entered Baltimore City Public Schools.
This exhibition is a testimony to the inner strength, resilience, and resourcefulness of these youth and families. Después de la Frontera / After the Border sheds light on their uncertainties and hopes that accompany their dreams of beginning a new life in the United States.
Después de la Frontera / After the Border is Tanya Garcia’s curatorial project, which is the culmination of her year-long Creative Alliance fellowship supported by the Robert W. Deutsch Foundation. Garcia is a Puerto Rican community artist, organizer, and storyteller. Her approach to storytelling is multifaceted and includes oral histories, video, and installation." http://tallerpr.org/event/despues-de-la-frontera-after-the-border/

My Soul's Shadow at the Kimmel Center

Friday and Saturday, April 15th + 16th, 2016 @ 7:00pm (Buy tickets HERE):

Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts
My Soul's Shadow
Manual Cinema

"Manual Cinema's My Soul's Shadow is a cinematic shadow puppet installation based on the poetry of Federico García Lorca. The shadow projections are created using six overhead projectors, five puppeteers, two screens, and dozens of handmade paper shadow puppets. Original music by Kyle Vegter is performed live by a chamber ensemble. The installation includes the text of the poems that are turned into moving images in the performance.
My Soul's Shadow loosely adapts imagery, themes, and characters from Lorca's poetry, dividing his body of work into three acts. The first act is based on poems Lorca wrote early in his career in Granada and Madrid; many of these poems take inspiration from Spanish folk tradition, and are steeped in nature imagery, as well as portraits of Granada's gypsy community. The second act is based on poems Lorca wrote while visiting New York City, and the third is based on The Divan Tamarit, which Lorca wrote near the end of his life, and which takes inspiration from the Arab-Andalusian poetic tradition. The performance of My Soul's Shadow is bookended by the character of Lorca himself, and is based on biographical details of his life, including his ultimate imprisonment and assassination at the hands of Nationalist militia in the early days of the Spanish Civil War.
6pm - 9pm Barnes Collection Access included for all Patrons

"Picasso: The Great War, Experimentation and Change" at the Barnes Foundation

February 21st - May 9th, 2016 (Buy tickets HERE)

"The Barnes Foundation, in partnership with the Columbus Museum of Art, Ohio, premieres Picasso: The Great War, Experimentation and Change on February 21. On view at the Barnes through May 9, this exhibition examines the dramatic fluctuations in Picasso’s style during the period surrounding the First World War, from 1912 to 1924. The show brings together some 50 works by the artist from major American and European museums and private collections, including paintings, drawings, watercolors, and costumes designed for the avant-garde ballet, Parade; and several pieces by his friends and contemporaries.
Unlike other members of the Parisian avant-garde, Picasso never directly addressed World War I as a subject in his art. Instead, he began experimenting with naturalistic representation, turning out classical figure drawings that outraged many of his avant-garde colleagues—this was quite a shift from the radical cubist approach he had been developing since 1907. Picasso did not give up cubism, however. Instead, he shuttled back and forth between two different styles for over a decade, breaking forms apart and making them whole again. The exhibition looks closely at the strange ambivalence characterizing Picasso’s wartime production, exploring it in connection with changes to his personal life, with his misgivings about cubism, and with the political meanings ascribed to cubism during the war.
The exhibition is curated by Simonetta Fraquelli, an independent curator and specialist in early 20th-century European art. The managing curator at the Barnes is Martha Lucy. The exhibition will travel to the Columbus Museum of Art in June 2016." http://www.barnesfoundation.org/exhibitions/picasso/

With more than a few ghoulish skeletons and macabre decorations, this annual event brings family and friends together to pray for and remember loved ones who have died. Far from a morose affair, Day of the Dead is a celebration, rich in traditions and connections—it is at heart a celebration of life." http://www.penn.museum/information/press-room/press-release-events/1015-day-of-the-dead-dia-de-los-muertos-celebration-at-the-penn-museum
